Be in School at Quarter to Nine!

The school gates open at 8.45am. Reception children can be accompanied into the Reception classroom with their parents. Key Stage 1 children enter through the Key Stage 1 entrance and Key Stage 2 children enter through the Key Stage 2 entrance. The school bell rings promptly at 8.55am. Getting to school on time is very important.

Children spend the first 15 minutes of each day writing in their class or doing individual and small group work, so it's vital that they arrive on time. Arriving just five minutes late each day amounts to over 16 hours of school missed per school year!

Assembly

Assembly is at 9.00am. Themes include a wide variety of topics covering religious, spiritual, moral, social and cultural themes. Acts of Collective worship take place within our assemblies which are wholly or mainly of a Christian character.

Monday mornings we have our weekly congratulations assembly where children are congratulated for their work. Parents and family members are welcome to attend these assemblies.

Literacy

Children involved in Read Write Inc will go to their groups and participate in their phonics, reading and writing activities.

Other children in Year 2 upwards participate in language and literacy sessions.

Playtime

At playtime the children can choose from a variety of toys, or play playground games with their friends. A teacher is on hand to organise active games each day. The Key Stage One and Key Stage Two jungle areas are operated on a timetable so that all classes get an equal opportunity to play with their classmates in there.

Children have the option of buying toast and juice from the school cook daily for a healthy playtime snack.

Maths

After playtime children start their Maths Make Sense lessons.

A lot of the work is practical and based on solving problems. Children are encouraged to independently select the resources that they think will support their learning.

Guided Reading

All children read weekly in a small group with a teacher or teaching assistant, this is called Guided Reading. The group read at the same level, with a carefully chosen book. During the session children are able to practise a wide range of reading skills, including applying their phonic knowledge to work out unfamiliar words.

Children also read individually at least once per week.

Reading with your child at home will really help him/her to develop their reading skills. Children learn to read by reading, so the more of it they do, the better they will be.

Lunchtime

Reception children eat their lunch first, followed by Key Stage 1 then Key Stage 2.

Children can have a hot dinner or packed lunch. Fresh water is provided and plenty of dinner supervisors are on hand to help the youngest children cut food, open packets, etc.

On a Friday we have a special treat day which all children have the option of participating in... pizza and chips.

Learning Journey

In the afternoons children will often be working on a particular learning theme. The theme is also connected to maths and English lessons, to enable cross curricular learning. The aim is that the skills that children learn in maths and English can be transferred to a range of subjects.

Sometimes certain subjects are taught in a block to enable a depth of learning that is not possible in just one or two lessons.

Story Time

Children need to hear stories if they are to develop into good writers. Story time is a special time when children have the opportunity to hear a range of stories from some of the best children's authorss.

Home Time

Children are dismissed to their parents at the end of the school day. Reception children will be dismissed from the Reception entrance. Key Stage 1 will be dismissed from the Key Stage 1 entrance. Key Stage 2 will be dismissed from the Key Stage 2 entrance by standing in line with their class until the teacher calls them after seeing their parentscarers.

Children will not be allowed to leave with unfamiliar adults, even if the child knows them. If someone different is picking up your child, you must phone the school office to let us know or inform us in the pupil planner.
