Science
Subject Intent
What is our intent for all children to achieve in this subject?
At St Mark’s, we want our children to be naturally curious about the world around them. Our curriculum has been developed by staff to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum and to foster a sense of wonder about natural phenomena.
We are committed to providing a stimulating, engaging and challenging learning environment. Throughout our school children are encouraged to develop and use a range of working scientifically skills including questioning, researching and observing for ourselves. We promote and celebrate these skills. We want our children to have a broad vocabulary. Scientific language is to be taught and built upon as topics are revisited in different year groups and across key stages.
We intend to provide all children regardless of ethnic origin, gender, class, aptitude or disability with a broad and balanced science curriculum.
Curriculum Overview
What our Children Say…
“My favourite thing about Science is making predictions and then seeing if your predictions are right or not. I also enjoy carrying out the experiments and watching to see what happens.” – Rohan, Year 6
“My favourite thing about Science is learning about the galaxy because there are so many secrets and surprises in space that not even scientists know about.” – Anayah, Year 5
“I loved visiting the Science Fair and seeing what all of the children had made.” – Caitlin Year 5
“Visiting the Planetarium at the think Tank was amazing!” – Ralph, Year 6
Extra Opportunities
Annually, we hold the St. Mark’s Science Fair. Each year we have a new theme. Last year’s theme was Time. Children created projects which linked to time and the whole school visited the Science Fair along with parents. We all learnt so much!
Many of our trips link to our Science topics. Year 4 children took part in a States of Matter workshop. Year 5 visited the Think Tank where they had a session in the Planetarium.
