Geography
Subject Intent
What is our intent for all children to achieve in this subject?
At St Mark’s, we aim to provide a high-quality geography curriculum to inspire, challenge and engage children to understand more about the world around them.
We aim to teach key concepts such as place, space, scale, environment, interconnections and physical and human processes to ensure children develop their disciplinary and substantive knowledge. This will help to provide children opportunities for field world and developing key geographical skills to inspire a love of learning.
The intent for geography at St Mark’s is to deliver the national curriculum in an engaging, exciting way. An engaging and active geography curriculum can help to develop connections through people and events in different places and cultures.
Curriculum Overview
What our Children Say…
“I enjoyed making a volcano and using bicarbonate of soda to watch it erupt. Because it was messy, we had to do this on the playground.” – Maryama
“I enjoyed looking at different maps from the local area and finding my house.” – Jawdan
“I am really enjoying our Geography topic about volcanoes. We used atlases to find where all of the volcanoes are in the world.” – Adam
Extra Opportunities
At St. Mark’s we ensure that trips are based around our topics. Children are taken on many trips throughout the year. These include: walks around our local area using maps, visits to Birmingham to look at human and physical features and visits to Sandwell Park.
Year 5 and Year 6 also attend a Sustainability Summit in the Summer Term. The children had to present work around deforestation and changes to our climate.
